A TRANSMISSION FROM TIM:
A few weeks ago my spouse surprised me with tickets to see The Annihilation of Fish starring James Earl Jones and directed by Charles Burnett. Sitting in the theater, I was immediately transported 1999, the year of its completion.
As Star Wars fans we know, this was a huge year for the franchise, seeing the release of The Phantom Menace, but it was also a major year for movies in general with films like The Matrix, The Sixth Sense, and Fight Club also making their debuts. So, it was interesting watching a film that felt like no other from its era. The only tropes it follows are those of its director, one of the most important Black filmmakers that too few know the name of. And it was nice to see George Lucas’ name on the opening credits for his part in making it so that the film could finally hit theaters in 2025.
