Ryan Perez & Anne Rieman: A Star Wars Story

As discovered in last week’s PART ONE of this episode — Ryan and Anne met while attending USC’s film school rival UCLA, which explains the plethora of film knowledge on display in their equally hilarious and insightful podcast Mama Needs A Movie! Anne has written and performed for the likes of Funny or Die, and Ryan has written for SNL, The Tonight Show (where he “met” Tim), and was featured in The Black List this year for a screenplay he co-wrote with Alex Kavutskiy called High Concept. So, go on! Subscribe to their pod!

Discussion Highlights:

Was George Lucas a hottie?

Well, we aren’y calling this #HotGeorgeSummer for nothing!

We all think of George Lucas as the quiet, monotone filmmaker who awkwardly tells actors to be “faster and more intense.” But, as Jim points out, he actually lived a pretty fast and dangerously intense life leading to a potentially lethal car crash in his youth.

It all let Tim wondering if Lucas was, perhaps, more high energy before the accident.

Which is an interesting thing to consider based on what our guest, Anne Rieman brings up later in the episode, saying:

…George Lucas, when he was still a car guy, when he was starting to be a filmmaker, was hot. And that, to me, is really shocking.

So what do you say?

Are we overthinking the connections between a filmmaker’s body of work?

Going through Lucas’ student films left us wonder — What’s be best way to put this all into context?

Ryan seems to think that its not the filmmaker that defines their own work, but something more elusive…

I think also that there's a temptation to go, well, I'm watching this young filmmaker's movies… How does it relate to who this person was their entire life? Like, that's the sort of – ‘Blank Check’ world we live in — is like they're building a story of their career and everything. It's like it's not in reality how artistic lives happen… You're more the product of your era.

- Ryan Perez (Yub Nub, 2024)

So, it’s interesting to note the politics that surrounded each of George’s trilogies:

Shout out to “Director Fits”

And, of course, Anne’s shout out to the Instagram page Director Fits is also what “yubbing” our honorary “nubs.” The fashion inspiration is endless!
