Patrick Cotnoir, Ryan Perez, & Anne Rieman: A Star Wars Story
Patrick Cotnoir has been the producer of The George Lucas Talk Show, at UCB from 2015 - 2020, and, starting in 2020, streaming weekly on PlanetScum.Live. He was the warm up comic for the first show, it was his first public ‘warm up experience’ and he doesn’t think he’ll ever do it again.
Meanwhile, Ryan Perez & Anne Rieman met as film students at UCLA and now host the hilarious and insightful movie discussion podcast, Mama Needs A Movie.
Fun Fact: You can listen to Tim in an episode!
Discussion Highlights:
The making of the making of the I’m George Lucas documentary:
The George Lucas Talk Show is an incredibly unique mix of late night, inprov, and Star Wars — as evidenced by their recent live panel with the cast of the AppleTV+ series Severance:
And as the show’s “Gary Kurtz,” Patrick understands how and why the show ticks.
I think it's a very specific show that most people could not work on just because I think you have to have certain weird interests that can hold your attention for 33 hours at a time.
- Patrick Cotnoir (Yub Nub, 2024)
In this episode we dive into how the documentary went from a few days of shooting to FIVE YEARS that bled into the age of Covid.
UCLA vs USC:
Ryan Perez and Anne Rieman of the Mama Needs A Movie podcast describe one key difference between USC (which George Lucas attended) and UCLA (which they attended).
The reason why people go to UCLA over USC is… it's much less expensive and everyone gets to make a film. So it's like you're taught how to be an indie filmmaker. And USC, you pitch a movie and… not everyone gets to direct.
- Anne Rieman (Yub Nub, 2024)
Star Wars as the fabric of our lives:
Before exploring George Lucas’ USC student films, Ryan described his entry into Star Wars fandom in a way many of us can identify with:
As a kid, I don't know if it meant anything to me. It was just it was what life was like. Darth Vader is not even a villain. Darth Vader is like your buddy.
